An ancestor altar is the foundation of your beginning in Hoodoo. I have met many, many people who have attempted to create/destroy and have no connection to their ancestors.
Your ancestors are what give you that power. Yes, you have an immense amount of power here in this world, but what about in the spirit world where you have never been? You have no power there unless you have a tie there.
Guess who your ties are?
Your ancestors.
How to Create an Ancestor Altar:
1. Find an area in your home besides your bedroom (unless you have no other place available,) and cleanse that area with Florida Water or Holy Water.
2. Make sure this area has a table or other flat, sturdy surface.
3. Cleanse the items going onto your altar. These items include: white candles, plates, photo frames, etc. Whatever you put on your altar is to be cleansed of any negative energy it may be harboring before adding it.
4. Find a white piece of fabric to put on your ancestor altar. This will serve two purposes:
A.To provide a special space for your ancestors
B. To catch the residue of any work you perform there, incense ash, etc. and provide an easier clean up.
5. Set your candle down, then gather a large glass, along with 6 smaller glasses. You will fill these glasses with spring water. Make sure these glasses have all been cleansed prior.
6. Light the candle, and offer this space to your ancestors. This is their area for them to commune and work with you. You will leave offerings here.
7. A note about offerings:
-Offerings can be big or small, depending on your budget and what your ancestor wants.
-You will have an idea once you see what happens to the other offerings (e.g. Does the water get bubbly and go down quickly while a shot of whiskey stays the same for a long time? Your ancestors may be telling you they enjoy the water but aren't too fond of the whiskey/alcohol itself.)
-Leave your offerings of food for up to a week unless it's non-perishable. If your ancestors tell you to leave it longer, that's fine. If they want it gone ASAP after it dries out, then do that.
-Typical offerings include, but are not limited to: coffee, soda, candy, their favorite meal, fresh fruit, vegetables, candles, and more. If they loved a certain perfume or cologne, get them a bottle!
8. Clean your ancestor altar at least once a week with Florida or Holy Water.
9. Have conversations with your ancestors at least once a day. Tell them your successes, your burdens, etc. They care about you and want you to succeed.
NOTE: To those who have been adopted or didn't know their deceased ancestors:
This is okay. What you will need to do is do all of these steps, and provide an empty picture frame. You can write "all benevolent ancestors" on a piece of paper within the frame or on the altar. Dedicate your space to those people. They will eventually reveal themselves to you.
